If you’re guilty of a crime never talk to the police, who cares what’s implied. Talking to them establishes motive and a slew of other factors, avoiding them or using the law to remain silent, this will slow or stop the investigation altogether.

There are ways to remaining silent even with a court ordered subpoena, if you can’t remember or recall on the stand, so be it. That’s where guilty people mess up, they talk to the police thinking they’ll outsmart them.

Rule of thumb: You don’t talk unless there’s a subpoena, when there’s a subpoena you don’t recall. Unless it’s in your interests to talk and you know charges can’t be brought against you.

He needs a lawyer. He comes in to talk, says something he shouldn’t and then they can build a case around that. The lawyer will ask why they need to talk to him, what it is in reference to, and then can guide your friend through the process. I say lawyer up.
